Fisker Karma Electric Auto zu Blast Out Fake Engine Sounds (Urteil: WARUM?)

How to live forever

Carnegie Mellon University's NeuroBank extracts and stores neural stem cells for the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Houston -- Third place team: NeuroBank
What it does: Extracts and stores neural stem cells for the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer's
Founders: Raymond Sekula, 35, and Sasha Bakhru, 27 School: Carnegie Mellon University
Launched: September 2007

Researchers are very close to figuring out how to use neural stem cells to cure brain disorders. Imagine being able to store your healthy neural stem cells today and use them to receive cutting-edge treatments for diseases you might develop later in life - such as Alzheimer's. NeuroBank plans to make that an option, initially for those newly diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries, Parkinson's, and stroke, but also for those in good health who want to preserve cells that are at their youngest and most robust. Neural stem cells, unlike embryonic stem cells, can generate cell types found in the central nervous system. But they deteriorate with age and neurological disease.

Video: See NeuroBank's elevator pitch
NeuroBank CEO and neuro-surgeon Raymond Sekula claims he found neural stem cells in spinal fluid. Before the discovery those cells were thought to reside mostly in the brain, from which doctors could harvest them only through a dangerous procedure that causes brain hemorrhage in 8% of patients. Neural stem cells now can be extracted through a much safer spinal tap. Sekula says he has 50 patients willing to undergo the procedure. During one business competition presentation he noted, "I've had at least a dozen healthy people in this room ask about storing their stem cells."

After extracting the cells, NeuroBank will prepare and keep them. The company, which has filed for four patents, will not develop treatments for any diseases.

Personal cellular storage already is available for human eggs, sperm, and umbilical-cord blood, so NeuroBank will be following an established business model - a factor that impressed the business plan judges. Sekula believes his company's entry into the market will be eased because the cellular storage business isn't FDA regulated. However, some judges worried that NeuroBank has not yet worked through regulatory compliance issues in areas such as patient privacy and the proper coding of the cells.

Even so, Sekula this year plans to secure $1 million in angel funding, launch a marketing campaign, and gain his first 100 customers.

Ultimate ski jackets

Klymit, a startup from BYU, uses gas to insulate outdoor sports apparel.
(FSB Magazine) Houston -- Second place team: Klymit
What it does: Uses gas to insulate outdoor sports apparel
Founders: Nate Alder; Nick Sorensen, 24; Brady Woolford, 29; Ben Maughan, 25
School: Brigham Young
Launched: February 2007

Alder's prototype windbreaker contains a series of connected, airtight chambers. A cartridge the size of a lipstick case, filled with pressurized argon, is sewn into a pocket or seam. Turn a knob and the gas flows into the chambers. Its large molecules block the cold and keep in the heat, yet it fattens the jacket by no more than ten millimeters. Turn the valve the other way and the gas escapes, letting the skier cool down. One cartridge lasts about a full season on the slopes and costs about $15.

Video: See Klymit's elevator pitch
Klymit has letters of intent from three top sports brands that want to license the patented technology for use in jackets, boots, snow pants, and sleeping bags. Klymit has also filed patents to use the insulation, which not only keeps out heat or cold but also dampens sound, in homes and automobiles. Stephen Watkins, founder of Entrex, a financial data firm based in Chicago and a contest judge, warns that "Klymit must stay focused and not become distracted by all the market opportunities presented by its technology."

An undaunted Alder says, "Like Velcro, it's a simple solution to a big problem."

Death to scalpers

The winning team, qcue, from the University of Texas at Austin, helps promoters price events and resell tickets.
(FSB Magazine) Houston -- First place team: qcue
What it does: Helps promoters price live events and concerts and resell tickets
Founders: Andrew Mills, Barry Kahn, and Jitendra Dalvi
School: University of Texas at Austin
Launched: August 2007

Barry Kahn grew up hearing how his father, Richard, went bust as a concert promoter. He had been thrilled to book Bob Weir, the rhythm guitar player for the Grateful Dead, to play a club in Washington, D.C. But then the club's owner booked the Dead's famous frontman, Jerry Garcia, to perform a few days before Weir - who then played to a nearly empty house.

Like Kahn's dad, many promoters have trouble selling out live events: About 55% of the tickets go unsold. Kahn's startup, called qcue, hopes to slash that surplus by helping ticket sellers properly price their products. "While getting my Ph.D. in economics, I got really bothered by inefficient markets," says Kahn. "And the ticket market is as inefficient as it gets."

Video: See qcue's elevator pitch
Qcue's patent-pending software helps promoters set and adjust prices for concerts and live events to clear their tickets, much as airlines have done for years. Qcue aims to cut out the middleman - including companies such as StubHub that sell unsold tickets, and scalpers - letting the promoters keep more profit for themselves. Scalpers, for example, have programs that can hack into sellers' systems and buy 1,000 tickets at a time. Let's say that scalpers start buying up $75 Springsteen tickets the moment they are offered for sale online. If, ten seconds after they go on sale, the tickets are being purchased at a higher rate than expected, qcue's software will instantly note the strong demand and raise the price of the tickets to, say, $200 each. The promoter, not the scalper, will end up with most of the profit. If demand eases, the software will drop prices to move the inventory.

Umesh Verma, an angel investor in Houston and a judge of the business plan contest, wonders whether qcue will be able to scale: "There will be vast volumes of transactions in a short period of time. Pricing algorithms need testing to make sure prices don't skyrocket or drop uncontrollably. There will also be security issues." Another concern: StratBridge, a software firm based in Cambridge, Mass., already offers a similar service directly to teams such as the Boston Celtics and is moving into the concert market.

Qcue is releasing a beta version of its product, qcue Festival, which is intended for festivals, nightclubs, and other smaller events. "We propose moving from 1,000-person events on up," says qcue CTO Andrew Mills. "No one starts out doing a Jimmy Buffett concert."

Back from the dead

The decline of major American industries such as steel, textiles, and tobacco threatened to turn these six towns into economic wastelands. Instead, local officials sought out new industries, reinventing their towns as meccas for biotech, software development, and telecoms.
Bethlehem, Pa.
This former steel city is remodeling itself into a high-tech player. Manufacturing giant Bethlehem Steel, once one of the largest steel producers in the U.S., employed as many as 167,000 people in its heyday. By the mid-`80s that number had plummeted to 35,000 as the cost of doing business and competition from foreign producers took their toll. The company shut down its Bethlehem plant in 1995 and closed for good in 2003.
The town has since transitioned to a tech-based economy, nurtured by the presence of major hospitals and colleges. The state aggressively courts new businesses via programs like Ben Franklin Technology Partners, which helps start-ups find funding and qualified staff. Meanwhile, the old Bethlehem Steel property is being converted into a luxury entertainment complex that will feature shopping, dining, a hotel and casino.

Worcester, Mass.
New England's second-largest city, Worcester was known in its previous economic incarnation as a manufacturing powerhouse, producing everything from textiles to machine parts. Although the city has made an effort to preserve its manufacturing capabilities, it's best known now as a hub of biotechnology.
The founding of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park in 1985 by the city's development corporation and the presence of 15 area colleges and universities fostered this new industry; Worcester is now home to more than a hundred biotech companies. The city strives to blend the green space and affordable housing options of a small town with the arts and culture of a big city: Worcester's well-known museums and libraries include the Higgins Armory Museum and the American Antiquarian Society.

Bend, Ore.
Situated among central Oregon's lush forests, lakes, rivers, and mountains, Bend's economy thrives on outdoor recreation. Bend was once a logging town, but decades of unsustainable harvesting eventually depleted the timberland, driving the lumber companies out of business. Brooks-Scanlon, at one time a major employer, closed its doors in 1994.
Since then, the city has become a tourist town, although smaller mills continue to produce some wood products. Mt. Bachelor, a popular ski destination, is Bend's second-largest employer. Tourists and the rapidly growing local population also enjoy kayaking, hiking, fishing, and rock climbing.

Wyoming

Taxes: No personal or corporate income tax
Best Places to Live and Launch: Cheyenne (No. 84)
The Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax analysis organization, ranks Wyoming's tax structure as the No. 1 most business-friendly in the nation, thanks to the absence of income tax and low sales and excise taxes. With fewer than 1 million residents, Wyoming is the least-populated state in the country, although almost 3 million visitors drop by annually to enjoy tourist magnet Yellowstone National Park.

In addition to low property taxes, Wyoming boasts a low cost of living. Abundant natural resources - oil, natural gas, coal and the mineral trona - drive the state economy. From 2000 to 2006, coal mining employment increased by 36%. The state produces 38% of the nation's coal and virtually all trona, which is processed into soda ash and used to make glass, pharmaceuticals, and baking soda. In addition to the famed Yellowstone, Wyoming is home to Grand Teton National Park and many other state parks, monuments and campgrounds.

Wyoming's largest city, Cheyenne, is striving to diversify its economy, relying on a growing service industry to provide jobs in retail, hospitality, finance and health care. In July, the city hosts Cheyenne Frontier Days, a Western festival featuring the world's largest rodeo.

GM to cut jobs, suspend dividend

Beleaguered automaker also plans asset sales. CEO Wagoner says company takes 'difficult decisions' necessary for survival.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it will suspend its dividend, sell off $4 billion to $7 billion worth of assets, and cut 20% worth of salaried cash costs.

Chief Executive Rick Wagoner, in a broadcast to employees, said that these were "difficult decisions," but necessary for the company to prevail in the weak economy beset by high oil prices, which he called GM's "greatest concern."

"Our plan is not just a plan to survive; it's a plan to win," said Wagoner, noting that raised cash could aid the company in shifting from trucks and SUVs to more fuel efficient cars.

GM (GM, Fortune 500) has lost about one third of its 107,000 U.S. hourly workers since 2004. GM offered buyouts to its entire remaining U.S. hourly workforce of 74,000 in February, in a bid to unload its more experienced, higher-paid employees.

The Detroit-based automaker has been hard-hit by record-high gas prices, economic weakness, and a waning consumer interest in trucks and sport utility vehicles. The company has not made a profit since 2005.

Truck sales were down 21% in the first six months of 2008, while car sales were down 9% and Hummer sales plunged 40%. Overall, GM's vehicle sales were down 16%: worse than the industrywide vehicle sales decline of 10%.

In June, GM said it would shut four SUV and truck plants, would shift to more fuel efficient vehicles and discontinue its Hummer brand.

The stock price for GM (GM, Fortune 500), the world's largest automaker, has plunged 62% this year, to 50-year lows.

Despite the doom and gloom in America, GM's sales edged up in Europe by 3% in the first six months of 2008, including a 58% increase in Eastern Europe and a 60% surge in Russia. This includes a 21% increase in Russian Hummer sales.

"Frankly, we're very well positioned outside the U.S. now, and will be in [the U.S.] too, when this cycle concludes," said Wagoner.

GM is the fourth-largest American company in terms of annual sales, competing with Toyota Motor (TM) and Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500).

Internet Money Making Principles

1) Distinct products or services. Everything sold can usually fall into these two categories. Services might be web design, web hosting, consulting, etc. Products are self explanatory. Products are the way to make big $ but may be harder to get going at first and have risk unless demand for the product has already been proven or carefully researched. Either way, you must differentiate yourself from the competition, not merely copy. Copycats have a hard time wrestling away consumers from already established businesses. It is harder to get a customer intially than keep them. If you have no competition, you must set and keep the standard with your company. Just because you don't have competition now doesn't mean you won't have it within a few months.

2) Understand margins. A margin is the amount of product expense verses profit. If it costs you $10 to make and ship a t-shirt and you sell it for $15, you have a $5 margin. Low margin items require a very high volume to make money. High margin items require much less traffic but depending on the price of the item, may require more skill in getting people to part with their cash. Low retail price products with high margins are gold. Next time you get spammed over and over again by a certain product, think about why they are marketing it so aggressively.

3) Understanding markets. Competition is fierce in some categories (travel is a recent example). Carve out a niche in a competitive market (i.e. target a city, region, or state) for more viable results. Low-competition markets (new or emerging markets) require you to set your own boundaries. How broad or narrow will depend on your goals and viability of servicing an audience and staying on top in that market.

4) Spend the most time on the most profitable ventures. If you are confident you have spent ample time on a market and the money isn;t there, don't be afraid to walk away or put the project on hold. Don't beat a dead horse...it is dead. On the other hand, if you tap into a vein that is producing very promising income, milk it for all it is worth and don't get distracted by other potential ventures.

5) Diversification. Once you have found an income stream you can tap into, you can't expect to last forever. Like a good stock portfolio, you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. Minimize risk through diversification. Multiple revenue streams, multiple products, multiple services, multiple businesses...whatever. Dont' overdiversify beyond what you can handle. Leave enough time to sufficiently develop promising current projects.
